About the Language
Bhojpuri (ISO 639-3 code: bho) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the Gangetic Plains of Northern India as well as the Terai region of Nepal. It is chiefly spoken in the western part of Bihar and the Purvanchal (Eastern) region of the state of Uttar Pradesh (UP), India. Apart from the subcontinent, various dialects of Bhojpuri are also spoken in other countries such as the Caribbean nations of Guyana (Guyanese Bhojpuri), Suriname (as Sarnami Bhojpuri), and Trinidad and Tobago (Trinidad Bhojpuri), as well as other countries such as Mauritius, South Africa, etc. Socio-politically, Bhojpuri is considered one of the many dialects of Hindi. It falls in the Eastern zone of Indo-Aryan and is further sub-categorized in the Bihari group. According to the 2011 Indian Census, Bhojpuri has 50,6000,000 speakers in India. Ethnologue mentions 52,405,300 speakers of Bhojpuri worldwide.

The Bhojpuri Language Collection at the CoRSAL Archive
The Bhojpuri collection at the CoRSAL archive currently includes audio and video recordings of texts and photographs documenting fieldwork and other events. The texts collected starting from early 2020 are an outcome of my fieldwork on the Azamgarhi language of Azamgarh while working on my Master of Philosophy dissertation at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. These texts are in the Western dialect of Bhojpuri spoken in the Azamgarh and Mau districts of UP. They are given with a view of (socio)linguistic comparison, whereas some are the outcomes of dialect surveys undertaken to determine the extent of the Azamgarhi language.
